Abstract

1474466 Determining the concentration of cations in solution IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Sept 1975 [14 Oct 1974] 44407/74 Heading G1A In an apparatus for determining the concentration of a plurality of types of cations, positively charged ions, in a solution 11, the unknown liquid is directed via a manifold 12 and a rebulizer 9 into a flame 8. Radiation from four lamps I each coated with one of the metals whose concentration in the solution is to be determined, and emitting a characteristic wavelength, is combined into a single beam 2 by mirrors 3 and lenses 4. The resulting beam is directed via the flame 8 and is received by a mono-chromator 23. The monochromator contains a photo-multiplier 24 and is set to one of the appropriate analyzing wavelengths. The flame is produced by a burner 7 equipped with ignitors 6 and fed by streams of nitrous oxide and acetylene. To enable calibration the manifold 12 is also supplied with four streams 10 of standard solutions of four mixtures of salts of the metals whose concentration in the process stream are to be determined. The whole apparatus may be computer controlled to analyze the process stream for four metals at pre-selected intervals.
