Abstract

1474410 Mass transfer device VYSOKA SKOLA CHEMICKO TECHNOLOGICKA 23 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 32483/74 Heading B1R A mass transfer device for contacting fluids, at least one of which is a liquid e.g. an absorption column, rectifier or extractor, comprises a packing comprising a plurality of elements some of which comprise (a) a substrate comprising a first organic polymeric material provided with (b) a continuous surface layer, comprising a second polymeric material, no thicker than 0.5 mm, the first and second polymers being respectively non-swellable and swellable with respect to any one liquid in which at least the second material is insoluble and to which at least the second material is chemically resistant. "Swellable" means that the polymer can absorb an amount of the liquid to an equilibrium capacity of 75% of the weight of the material, with a contact angle of 0‹-25‹, "non-swellable" being absorption 0-5% and contact angle >25‹. If the liquid is polar, the substrate comprises a hydrophobic polymer e.g. polythene, polypropylene, PVC, polyamide, and the layer polymer is hydrophilic. The shape of the substrate may be a Raschig ring or a helix, or it may be in the form of a partition wall.
