Abstract

1474388 Apparatus for supporting a workpiece e.g. a wheel and tyre assembly DUNLOP Ltd 29 May 1974 [13 June 1973 11 Dec 1973] 28160/73 and 57304/73 Heading B7C Relative rotation between a workpiece e.g. a tyre and wheel assembly and a fixed, non- circular section post 102 of a workpiece support is presented by a projection 115 of a member 112, slidable but non-rotatable relative to the post, engaging an edge of the workpiece e.g. a bolt hole of the wheel. As illustrated, the post may be hexagonal in section and the member may comprise a tube having a hexagonal internal section 113 at one end. The tube may have a frusto-conical member (205) (Fig. 7 not shown) which engages with the periphery of the central hole of the wheel, and in this case the projection (208) is slidable in the slot (207) of a radially extending arm (206) so that the apparatus may accommodate assemblies of varying sizes. In a further embodiment, the member may be a plate (307) (Figs. 9 and 10 not shown) which is slidable in a hollow post (301). A shaft (302) within the post is rotatable, e.g. by a motor or a cam driven rack and pinion, to effect rotation of a tyre removal lever. The post may be of square section or may be of circular section with a longitudinal key-way wheel receives a key secured to the member. The apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2, includes a support 117 on which the assembly is initially placed so that the beads may be broken separately by a bead breaker 116. which comprises telescoped sections 137, 138 pivoted at 134 on a pivoted arm 124. The relative positioning of the sections depends on the assembly size. Then the assembly is placed on the support surface 105 and located against rotation is already described. The tyre is then removed using lever 125. The support 117 may be replaced by a bar (150) provided with a peg (151) for engaging a hole immediately radially inwardly of the wheel rim, the bar being received by tube 12.
