Abstract
1474248 Catalysts for reforming hydrocarbons AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 6 Dec 1974 52855/74 Heading C5E Petroleum fractions are hydroformed in the gaseous phase in the presence of hydrogen and catalyst particles comprising an alumina support and either Pt or Pt together with Re, Ga, Ge, Ir, Rh or Zn: the catalyst particles have a polylobal cross-sectional shape with the lobes being defined by circles of equal diameter, when there are only two lobes the centres of the circles are spaced from each other by # to 15/16 of the diameter of the circles and when there are more than two lobe lines connecting the centres of adjacent circles form a substantially equilateral polygon each side of which is # to 5/16 of the diameter of the circles; all the area included by the circles and polygon being of the alumina base. The process can be used to treat straight run or cracked petroleum naphtha at 850- 1000 F., 100-500 p.s.i.g. and 500-5000 SCF hydrogen per barrel. The catalyst particles suitable have 2-5 lobes and can be prepared by extruding a precipitated alumina which can also contain up to 20 wt. per cent silica or up to 25% of a zeolite. A metals content of 0À1-1À0 wt. per cent can be incorporated before or after the shaping and the catalyst can also contain chloride ions.
