Abstract

1474139 Artificial eye lens L FLOM 13 Feb 1975 [7 March 1974] 6194/75 Heading A5R An artificial intraocular lens for implantation in the patenar chamber of the eye has an. optical zone portion 11 and a plurality of prongs 13 to 20 around its periphery which project forwardly from the front of the lens for insertion in the iris. The lens may have a peripheral flange 12 from which the prongs extend and drain holes 21 to 24 for permitting aqueous humor to pass from the ciliary body to the autenar chamber. The prongs are arranged in pairs, the prongs of each pair projecting forwardly of the lens in use and being oppositely directed and extending in outer curved portions generally parallel to and along the periphery of the lens. The optical zone (or the flange) may have a peripheral groove 26 which receives a band 25 supporting the prongs. Alternatively, the prongs may each be tightly received in an opening in the optical zone portion or may be connected in pairs by a connecting portion (43) Figure 5 (not shown) which is embedded in the periphery of the optical zone portion. A lens having a peripheral flange may be inserted in an eye by a tool comprising a handle 53, Figure 6, attached to a loop 51 by a tail 52, the loop and tail being made of material which retains its shape when bent e.g. superanud or vitallium (Registered Trade Mark) wire or polyethylene or plastics tubing or wire. In use the loop is threaded through a pair of oppositely disposed drain holes 24, 22 and around the lens. The loop is removed by cutting and pulling away after the lens has been positioned.
