Abstract

1473997 Boring earth &c RUSTON-BUCYRUS Ltd 24 Jan 1975 [20 March 1974] 3270/75 Heading E1F In drilling apparatus of the type in which the mast is tiltably mounted on a platform, e.g. the chassis of a mobile drill, the mast is locked in the upright position by a latch member on the platform engaging a catch on the bottom of the mast, the latch engaging the catch with a wedging fit to secure the mast to the platform without play. As described a catch plate 16 having a tapered slot 18 is secured to the bottom of the mast 14, 15, 17 and a latch 37 having an inclined surface 38 is pivoted on a rod 31 fixed to the platform 20. The latch 37 is rotated to engage the slot 18 by operating a ram 35, the inclined surface 38 engaging the tapered slot 18 with a wedging fit to lock the mast to the platform without play. In a modification (not shown) for use in inclined drilling an elongated catch plate having a plurality of tapered slots is provided on the mast, the latch 37 being engaged with the appropriate slot to provide the desired inclination of the mast.
