Abstract

1473943 Thermal/catalytic fume incinerator U O P INC 17 April 1974 16692/74 Headings B1F and B1W A thermal catalytic fume incinerator comprises an elongate housing, an elongate cylindrical form, partition defining with the housing an annular space within the housing, at least part of the partition comprising gas pervious means comprising an oxidation catalyst, a fume inlet to the housing, a burner downstream of the fume inlet, a heating zone into which in use hot burner gases are discharged and fumes preheated as specified below pass in order to be heated by contact with the burner gases and from which zone a resulting mixture of hot gases passes from the annular space to a region within the partition or viceversa so as to undergo catalytic oxidation, and an oxidised gas outlet disposed to enable exit of the resulting oxidized gas from the housing, the apparatus including a heat exchange zone disposed to receive fumes from the fume inlet and to preheat said fumes by means of heat exchange with hot gaseous material. A gas filter may be disposed within an upstream portion of the partition to filter gases passing from the burner to the catalyst. Thus in Fig. 1, fumes entering at 2 are preheated by passage through tubes 4, they then pass with gases from burner 9 into heating zone 11, where combustion may occur from whence the resulting mixture passes through annular oxidation catalyst member 12 to preheat incoming fumes and leave at 16. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown), the mixture of gases from the heating zone preheat incoming fumes and then pass inwardly through the annular catalyst member, the catalyst member being in the form of axial portions alternating with non-perforate acid portions.
