Abstract
1473704 Styryl-benzoxazole derivatives HOECHST AG 20 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 27391/74 Heading C2C Novel styryl-benzoxazole derivatives having the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl or lower alhoxy radical or a cycloalkyl radical of from 4 to 8 carbon atoms or a phenyl radical wherein the alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl and phenyl radicals may each be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more of the same or different non-chromophoric substituents or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, being attached to adjacent carbon atoms of the benzoxazole ring, together represent an alkylene radical of 3 or 4 carbon atoms or form, together with the two carbon atoms of the benzoxazole ring, a fused benzene ring; R<SP>3</SP> represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl or lower alkoxy radical; X represents a lower alkoxy, acyloxy or acylamino group, which groups may be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more of the same or different non-chromophoric substituents; and Y represents a free or functionally modified carboxy group or a lower alkanoyl group, are prepared by either (a) reacting a compound of the formula wherein R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> are independently lower alkyl, (C 4 -C 8 )-cycloalkyl or phenyl, and are bound directly or via an oxygen atom to the phosphorus atom, with a compound of the formula or (b) by reacting a compound of the formula with an activated derivative of the formula wherein X is as defined above or a nitro group, and cyclizing the so-obtained acylamino compound, and if X represents a nitro group, reducing the nitro group to an amino group and acylating the amino group to obtain a compound in which X represents an acylamino group as defined above. In process (b), the activated derivative is suitably an acid halide and the cyclization is preferably carried out in the presence of an acid condensation agent at a temperature of from 180‹ to 250‹ C. The novel compounds may be used as optical brightening agents.
