Abstract

1473655 Waveguides POST OFFICE 15 Nov 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 41193/73 Heading H1W A dielectric waveguide includes a dielectric core of oval cross-section having an aspect ratio not less than 1À1 and not greater than 1À5. Preferably, the upper limit is 1À3, and in a preferred embodiment the aspect ratio is 1À18. It is stated that distortion due to phase dispersion is diminished and that physical distortion of the waveguide when manipulated results in an increase in aspect ratio and a fall in distortion. The core 1 may be made of solid, stranded or foamed polypropylene and is surrounded by a sheath 2 of foamed polypropylene. This, in turn, is surrounded by a lossy layer 3 of, e.g. polypropylene loaded with carbon and a waterproof protective jacket 4 of a suitable polymer. The core 1 may be made by an extrusion process which eliminates formation of voids. The layers 3, 4 may have a circular (as shown) or an oval configuration.
