Abstract

1473491 Pressure sensitive adhesive labels STERLING LABELLING SYSTEMS Ltd 4 April 1974 [4 Jan 1973] 516/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A label comprises a paper carrier coated on each face at least adjacent the periphery thereof with a pressure sensitive adhesive, and a surface layer of the same size as the paper carrier applied to the carrier on one face thereof and bonded thereto by the adhesive, the internal strength of the paper carrier being less than the strength of the adhesive bond between the adhesive and the surface layer and less than the strength of the adhesive bond between the adhesive and a smooth surface so that any attempt to remove the label from the smooth surface when affixed thereto causes the paper carrier to rupture. The exposed adhesive layer is preferably protected by a removable tape, release paper or removable film. In the example, one surface of a sulphite paper is coated with an adhesive comprising smoked rubber, two hydrocarbon resins, a terpene resin, an antioxidant and petroleum spirit and the adhesive overlaid with a release layer comprising glassine paper coated with a silicone. The other surface of the sulphite paper is then coated with the adhesive and overlaid with a white litho label paper and the resultant laminate cut into labels.
