Abstract

In a hole 2 in asbestos plate 1, Mo bearer plate 6, alumina 9 coated towards fuel burner 11, carries porous sintered W cathode 7 impregnated with Ba-Ca aluminate Ba 2 CaAl 2 O 6 formed before impregnation by heating the mixed carbonates with alumina, the cathode surface being finally coated with 50 nm of Pt by sputtering or vacuum evaporation. Cu disc anode 5, blackened at the back or with radiating fins, is seated 1 mm from anode 7 in a shoulder of a ceramic ring 4 resting on step 3 of plate 1. The Cs atmosphere at 1 Torr is provided from a heated reservoir (not shown). The work function of Pt (5À4 eV), being higher than the ionization potential of Ba<SP>++</SP> (5À2 eV), allows a cloud of + ions to form in equilibrium with the cathode, preventing Ba from contaminating the anode.
