Abstract

1472893 Antennae; direction finding A W RUDGE and H WUNNENBERG 27 Jan 1975 [30 Jan 1974] 4313/74 Headings H4A and H4D A directional antenna system comprises a plurality of direction finding antenna which may be integrated with a communications antenna on, e.g. a communications satellite, which is to be maintained in the optimum reception position, by a follow-up device which is controlled by the direction error signals produced by an analysis circuit connected to receive signals from the direction finding antennae, which comprise at least two offset parabolic reflector antennae arranged to produce a common direction finding beam. As described, a two axis direction finding system, Fig. 3, comprises primary radiators F1, F2, F3, F4 situated at the focus of respective reflectors R1, R2, R3, R4 which each comprise an offset portion of a paraboloid (having an apex, e.g. 51 in Fig. 1, not shown). Antennae A1, A2 and A3, A4 provide directional error signals on the y and x axes respectively. The directional error signals are analysed in the passive microwave circuit of Fig. 4 comprising hybrid coupler H1 connected to antennae A1, A2 to produce a phase error signal S#1,2 at its a2 output, hybrid coupler A2 connected to antennae A3, A4 producing the orthogonal phase error signal S#3,4, and hybrid coupler H3 which produces the sum signal S#1,2 3 4 from all the antennae A1-A4. These signals are used in a known follow up control system to maintain the direction finding antenna in the direction of maximum signal reception. In Fig. 5 an embodiment for use in a communications satellite comprises the four direction finding antennae F1-F4 and in addition a fixed antenna F5 having a large half power beam width for transmission of telemetry signals and reception of command signals, and is connected to its TX/RX device Sp/Ep, which is also used to provide a signal equivalent to the sum signal from the direction finding antennae. This signal r is fed to error signal analysis circuit ASE to serve as the sum signal with reference to the difference signals fed from outputs a2 of hybrid couplers A1 and A2. In this case the sum signal present at the output a1 of hybrid coupler H3 may therefore be coupled to the communications receiver/transmitter Sn/En whereby the direction finding antennae may together constitute the main communications antenna of the satellite. As the analysis circuit cannot directly recognize the sign of the input directional error signals variable phase shift devices P11, P22, P33, P44 are provided and are commutated by a pulse train T to produce a small known phase shift in the error signals whereby the sign thereof may be recognized in ASE.
