Abstract
1472645 Polyacrylonitrile fibres MONSANTO CO 8 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973 10 Aug 1973] 34966/74 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Acrylonitrile-containing polymeric material of good dimensional stability under hot-wet conditions is made by forming a mixture of 5-35 % polymer with solvent, heating to dissolve the polymer, wet- or dry-spinning to form fibres, washing and drying the fibres, heat treating at at least 140 C. for 1-10 minutes to effect crosslinking, and crimping either before or after the heat treatment. The polymeric material comprises (A) a polymer selected from polyacrylonitrile, a copolymer comprising at least 35% acrylonitrile, or a blend of polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer thereof and 2-50% of another monomer and (B) a copolymer comprising 50-90% acrylontrile and 10-50% of a N-substituted derivative of an ethylenically unsaturated acid amide, e.g. N-methylolacrylamide, N-methylolmethacrylamide, or N- methoxymethylacrylamide, or mixtures, the amount of (A) being 70-98% and of (B) 2-30%. The fibres may be treated with dilute acid, e.g. 0À001 N to 0À01N sulphuric or phosphoric before heat treatment. The fibres may be used in carpets. The solvent used may be dimethyl-formamide or -acetamide.
