Abstract

1472622 Microfilms XEROX CORP 15 Aug 1974 [16 Aug 1973] 35963/74 Heading G2X A microfilm or the like 10 has its microimage frames 12, 14, 16 coded by holographic images 18 to 20 disposed adjacent each frame or each series of frames. The microimages may be formed by a computer system wherein information is written one frame at a time by an electron beam forming an image on the phosphor face of a cathode ray tube, the image being projected through a lens system 30 on to the microfilm or the like. The holographic images are formed using a coherent light source 26, a beam splitter 27 and data reflectors 24a, 24b, 24c....., the latter being selectively activated by moving them into positions in which they reflect the light or by changing their reflectivity, e.g. by altering their surface characteristics using liquid crystals or other optically responsive materials. The holographic images may be in the form of a binary code, and during the recording of each image the other image areas may be masked. The holographic images are automatically searched using photoelectric detectors (29a), (29b), (29c) ..., Fig. 3 (not shown), the microfilm or the like being stopped when the desired code is detected.
