1472120 Releasable fastenings HOLLINGSEAD PRYOR ENTERPRISES INC 8 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 20261/74 Heading E2A Apparatus for retaining electronic apparatus in racks for installation in aircraft comprises a tray 4 (Fig. 1) with a back plate 10 retaining detachable electrical connectors 14 of known form and locating pins 12 engaging bores of an electronic unit 16 slidably supported on the tray, which is carried on rails 6, 8 and contains a sealing gasket (not shown) sealably engaging the underside of the electronic unit to permit introduction of cooling air. Handles (not shown) on the front plate 15 of the unit 16 permit manual insertion and extraction. Hooks 13 of the front plate 15 are engagable with circumferential slots of a releasable locking and extraction device 2 capable of forcibly clamping the unit 16 to the tray 4 or alternatively initiating axial removal of the unit from the tray, of the kind described in US Patent 3640141. During insertion and locking of the electronic unit the axis of the device 2 is positioned at a substantial angle # of e.g. 25 to 30 to the axis of the electronic unit and during extraction it is positioned thereto at a smaller angle Á of e.g. 0 to 20 to reduce vertical forces capable of damaging the detachable connectors. A threaded spindle 20 of the locking and extraction device advanced and retracted by an external rotary shell has a T- piece 24 of an extension thereof and is received by an entrance slot 22 at the front of a mounting member 18 on the rail 6, which also has a slot 19 (Fig. 3) engaging the T-piece; thus permitting vertical lost motion and angular displacement. The slot 19 permits at one end the axis of the locking device to assume angle e.g. 25 to 30 to the axis of the electronic unit and at the other end angle e.g. 0 to 20. In operation, device 2 is positioned with its T-piece engaging the forward end of slot 19 (Fig. 1) to define angle # for insertion and at the rearward end of slot 19 to define angle Á for extraction (Figs. 1, 2) a safe angular deflection being defined by the locations of the upper edges of slots 19, 22 to avoid lifting the unit 16 and damaging the connectors 14 by mechanical strain.
