Abstract

Lever-actuated pumps; diaphragm pumps; pumps with air cushion betu;een piston and liquid; regulating delivery by admission of air.- Apparatus for raising fuel or oil for internal-combustion engines &c. from a low level tank to a chamber 1 at a higher level comprises a pipe between the tank and chamber provided in the two non-return valves 13, 14 between which is inserted a pump. In one form, the pump comprises a chamber 7 closed by a reciprocating diaphragm 4 and connected to the fuel pipe by a pipe 33 of suflicient capacity to contain the liquid drawn through the valve 13 by the suction stroke of the diaphragm. When the fuel reaches a certain level in the chamber 1, a float 19 opens a valve 17 and admits air through a pipe 15 to the chamber 7 to render the pump ineffective. In another form, the diaphragm is replaced by a piston which is reciprocated by the exhaust valve of the engine through pawl and ratchet gear, crank, and lever.
