Abstract

1472000 Apparatus for forming spherical filler material TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 4 Sept 1974 38571/74 Headings D1F DIN and D1R An apparatus for making a filler material comprises a yarn feeding means 2, a guide channel 12, 13, a means to urge the yarn forward, e.g. pneumatic device 11, a cutter 16 between the yarn urging means 11 and the outlet of guide channel 13, all of which feed yarn pieces to containers 14 into which gas is ejected by means 22 to form the yarn into spherical shape, means also being provided to remove the pieces from the containers, the containers moving relative to the guide channel to be successively positioned near its outlet. The means to spherically form the yarn are gas delivery tubes which may be heated in order that the yarn is softened for self adhesion. Suitable binding agents may also be added. Gas from the forwarding device also has an opening effect on the yarn e.g. opening a multi-filament yarn into its components. The yarn may be forwarded continuously or intermittently. If forwarded continuously a yarn storage device can be provided comprising a belt with yarn guides which entrain a loop of yarn in the region of the forwarding device. Examples are given employing a 75 denier 12 filament polyethylene terephthalate multifilament yarn and also a 100 denier 15 filament sheath-core yarn, the core being polyethylene terephthalate (softening point 260‹C) and the sheath polyester (softening point 175‹C). The product formed having a spherical form with a dense surface and hollow interior, Fig. 11 (not shown).
