Abstract

147,164. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., (Assignees of Lewis, A. P.). Aug. 30, 1916, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Rotary type for cutting rectilinearly.-Apparatus for trimming a strip of uniform width from the selvedges of fabrics comprises two rotary knives A, one for each edge of the fabric, driven by independent electric motors B and mounted on sliding carriages C capable of independent adjustment and aLso of movement across the fabric in correspondence with the movements of guides or control fingers D, which are constantly pressed into engagement with the edges of the fabric. Motor-driven magnetic clutches F are provided to operate traversing means for the knives, the closing of the clutches being controlled by two-way switches rocked by the lateral movements of the fingers D. The fabric passes, under tension, over rollers 34 and tables 29, Figs. 3 and 4, partly surrounding the knives A, which are carried by shafts 15 mounted in thrust and tubular bearings 16, 16<1> and driven by the motors B. The beds 20 of the motors are formed in one with the tubular bearings 16<1>, Figs. 4 and 5, and pivoted at 27 to plates 18, angular movement of the cutters in relation to the fabric being allowed on releasing catches 28. Dovetailed guides 25 for the plates 18 are carried by plates 21, on which they are adjustable by screws provided with milled heads 26, the plates 21 being capable of angular adjustment on plates 19 sliding on dovetailed guides 22 carried by the framing. Secured to the plates 19 are arms 30 carrying brackets 31 engaged by traversing screws H by which are effected the necessary lateral adjustments of the knives corresponding to the movements of the fingers D. Carriages E to which the fingers D are connected are mounted on rollers between rails 45 and the tops of casings 41, the sides of which are slotted to allow movement of the arms 40 carrying the feeling members D kept constantly in engagement with the edges of the fabric by weights E<1>. Carried by the carriages E are twoway switches controlling the magnetic clutches F by which rotation in opposite directions is imparted to the screws H, the switches comprising inverted T-shaped rocker arms 49 pivoted at 49<1> to the carriages E and connected by pins 50 to arms 51 secured to the cutter carriages 19. Movement of the feeling members D in one direction or the other rocks the arms 49 and causes one of two sets of contacts 56 carried thereby to be dipped into mercury troughs 57, 58 and through suitable connexions to energize one or other of two pairs of magnetic clutches F, Fig. 5, driven through worm gearing from motor-operated shafts 71. The clutches are carried respectively by shafts 60, 61 mounted in ball bearings in the walls of casings 37 and are connected by gearwheels 68, 69. Mounted on shafts 72, 73 are the movable members 82, 75 of the clutches, and also carried by these shafts are gear wheels 76, 78, 80 by which rotation in opposite directions, according to the clutches closed by the two-way switches 49, is imparted to wheels 81 on the cutter traversing-screws H, idle wheels 77 being interposed between the wheels 76 and 78. When the knife carriages have been sufficiently moved to bring the two-way switches 49 to a neutral position, the clutch circuits are broken and the screws cease to revolve. Means are provided on the circuits to prevent movement of the cutter carriages C under the influence of the weights E<1> when the passage of the fabric is completed.
