Abstract

1471539 Making universal joints; riveting MOLLART ENG CO Ltd 11 Feb 1975 [16 Nov 1973] 53293/73 Headings B3U and B3A [Also in Division F2] A metal pin 24, (Fig. 4), which may secure together the two elements 10 or 11 of a universal joint is provided with heads 25 on its two ends by forming dies 32 which also act as heating electrodes for the pin. The universal joint (Fig. 3) includes a trunnion block 12 located between the forked ends of the two elements 10 and 11. Two pins 24 and 19 connect the forked ends to the block, the pin 19 having a transverse bore to accommodate the headed pin 24. The pin 24 is provided with bushes on either side of the pin 19. The riveting machine (Fig. 15) includes a forming die 65 on each side of the universal joint 10, 11, the dies being connected to respective electrical terminals 67 and being of a conductive material such as sintered tungsten carbide and copper. A heavy current, e.g. 4000 amps, is passed through the pin 24 by the dies to soften the pin before it is headed. The dies are moved together by a pair of pivoted arms whose opposite ends are acted on by a pneumatic or an air-hydraulic ram. The movement of the dies is regulated by an equalizer linkage. The dies are cooled by cooling water supplied through pipe 68 and by compressed air from ducts 71. The pin may alternatively be the swivel pin used in pliers.
