Abstract

1471198 Upgrading titanium ores MITSUBISHI KINZOKO KK 12 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 30929/74 Heading C1N Iron containing titanium oxide ores are upgraded by a process comprising contacting the ore with chlorine and a solid carbon reducing agent in a fluidized bed to produce FeCl 3 vapour which is passed to a hollow column oxidation furnace to produce Cl 2 gas and iron oxide characterized in that the exit gases from the oxidation process are subjected to dust removing and drying operations and the Cl 2 is recovered from the exit gases and recycled to the chlorination stage. Exit gases from the chlorination stage, which contain FeCl 3 , are suitably fed to an oxidation furnace provided with a nozzle injecting an oxidizing gas in a direction and at a velocity such that the first contact of the discharge gas with the oxidizing gas occurs in an open space of the furnace and the turbulence caused by the first collision does not reach the wall of the furnace, the temperature gradient being controlled so that the outlet is cooler than the inlet. In a preferred embodiment, chlorine is introduced into a fluidized bed 1 containing the ore and reducing agent at a temperature of 800‹ to 1000‹ C. The gases issuing from the chlorination furnace 1 are passed at a temperature of 700‹ to 950‹ C. to an oxidation furnace 2. The exit gases at 400- 700‹ C. from the furnace 2 are passed to a dust removing device 3, a dryer 4, a compressor 5 and thence to a tower 6 containing liquid chlorine. Free chlorine is removed from the gas and the liquid chlorine is passed to a reservoir 8. The exhaust gases are vented to the atmosphere after passage through an alkaline solution to remove acid gases. The chlorine may alternatively be separated from the gas phase by selective absorption in an organic solvent. The separated chlorine is re-vapourized 9 and recycled to the chlorination stage 1. Chlorinated ore may be subjected to magnetic separation followed optionally by wet treatment and/or electrostatic separation. The ore is preferably oxidized before treatment in the chlorination stage.
