Abstract

1471192 Tyre building drums GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 28 June 1974 [17 Sept 1973] 28828/74 Heading B7C After initial expansion (Fig. 6, not shown), of the ends of a tyre building drum to form shoulders (72) in a carcass ply or plies (71), and application of bead core assemblies (73), (Fig. 7, not shown), to the shoulders, bead locking means adjacent each end of the drum are expanded to hold the bead core assemblies coaxial with the drum, and the locking means are held in that expanded condition during turn-up of the ply or plies. The bead locking means at each end of the drum includes at least three radially movable clamps 55. Actuation of a pneumatic cylinder 64 (or other pneumatic or hydraulic means) moves, via transmission means, e.g. chain 63 and sprockets 61, and rack and pinions 56, the members 55 simultaneously between their extended and retracted positions. Carcass turn-up is effected by inflation of bladders 16.
