Abstract

1471181 Pulp extrusion apparatus R ENGELL 16 May 1974 21776/74 Heading B5A A tube of wood fibre pulp is extruded from a tubular passage defined by means of a tubular piston 23 which is reciprocated by a crank 24 between a mandrel 8 and a die 6, along an upstream extension of the mandrel, and which has a screen 26 at its downstream face through which suction is applied to remove water from the pulp, the suction being applied through channels 27 of the piston, and a chamber 28 through which the piston reciprocates. The tube is dried and cut into lengths for cores for paper rolls. Suction may also be applied through a die screen ring 11, and a co-axial mandrel screen ring 14. The mandrel 8 extends downstream of the die 6, to provide support for compression of the extruded tube, during removal of further water by a rubber collar 20 which is expanded by pulsating compressed air delivered at 22, e.g. from a piston pump. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, which does not comprise the invention, the piston is omitted and the pulp is subjected to compression at a frusto conical die inlet 17, to which it is delivered from a source under a pressure effecting the extrusion.
