Abstract

1471135 Polymers having terminal groups; block copolymers ATO CHIMIE 18 March 1975 [19 March 1974] 11183/75 Heading C3P Polymers having terminal peroxide or hydroperoxide groups are prepared by (1) polymerizing one or more vinyl monomers by free radical, heat or photochemical radiation initiation in the presence of an adjuvant M(X) p in which M is boron, aluminium or a Group IIb metal (Mendeleev), p is the valency of M and X is hydrogen, halogen or a monovalent organic radical, the initiation means being one which exerts no action on the adjuvant, so as to produce a polymer having metallic chain ends, (2) treating the polymer with a peroxidizing agent, e.g. air, oxygen, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, or a peroxide, hydroperoxide, peracid or perester, and optionally (3) hydrolysing the peroxidic polymer to produce hydroperoxide groups. In examples, homopolymers of methyl acrylate, hexyl methacrylate, tetraethylene glycol methacrylate, methyl cyanoacrylate, styrene and vinyl chloride are prepared in benzene solution using azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator and zinc diethyl, zinc diphenyl, boron triethyl or aluminium triethyl as adjuvant, the polymers being oxidized with air to form terminal peroxide groups, and then hydrolysed in deionized water containing lauryl sulphate to form hydroperoxide groups. The above products may be used as initiators in block polymer formation. In Example 7, styrene is added to a benzene solution of a hydroperoxide-terminated poly(methyl acrylate) to form a polystyrene/poly(methyl acrylate) block copolymer.
