Abstract

1471056 Continuous casting TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 22 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 12970/74 Heading B3F The external shell surface of a partially solidified continuous casting 46 is intermittently compressed in the direction of casting and perpendicular to said direction. This is achieved periodically by the longitudinal oscillation of a mould 26 which has a taper, of at least part of the mould cavity, in a direction opposite to that of casting, the speed of the mould, due to the oscillation, in the direction of casting being faster than the rate of issue of the casting from the mould so that the tapered wall abuts the casting surface during the advance of the mould, to apply the compressive forces. Downstream of the taper, the mould wall may be untapered, or tapered in the direction of casting, or have these forms consecutively. Instead of an open-ended mould, a mould with a closed end may be used as described in Specification 1,316,607. The mould 26 is oscillated by an air cylinder or a crankwheel 52, Fig. 5. A link 56 from the wheel 52 to a bracket 58 on the mould includes a pneumatic cylinder 64 and piston 68. Compressed gas is supplied through a regulator 74 so that pressure in the cylinder 64 is constant irrespective of the piston position and it forms an air spring. When the casting withdrawal speed is increased, the speed of oscillation is increased. The resistance of the casting to compression by the mould taper may slow the mould speed forward and cause displacement of the piston 68 as indicated. As shown in Fig. 3, an open-ended mould 26 is fed from a tundish 10 by a tube 14 and a boron nitride sleeve 22 secured by keys 24 in a watercooled copper collar 16 fastened by bolts 18 to the tundish. The mould 26 slides on bearings 32 of the copper collar 16. Spring-biased sealing segments 36 of boron nitride or graphite allow hot gases but not metal to escape rearwardly.
