Abstract

1471054 Bundling articles in stretched wrappers LANTECH Inc 14 March 1974 [4 April 1973] 11532/74 Heading B8C A stretched wrapper is applied around a load by applying a first length under substantially no tension, applying a further length under tension, and securing the wrapper thus formed in place. Apparatus for carrying out this operation comprises a platform 22 upon which a palleted load 12 to be wrapped is located, the platform being rotated about its central axis by a motor 26 carried by a base 25, and a roll 15 of sheet material, for example polythene, from which wrapping material is drawn on to the load by rotation of the platform. The roll is vertically supported upon a shaft 27 provided at its base with a brake drum 30. Located within the drum is a brake shoe 31 mounted upon a lever 32 and the lever is biased away from the drum by a spring 33 against the action of an adjustable spring 36 which acts through a first wire 38, a pivoted operating arm 35, and a brake cable 34. The spring 36 is adjusted to be stronger than spring 33 to cause the brake shoe to be normally urged on to the brake drum. A pivoted lever 40 is provided to engage the operating arm 35 against the action of spring 36 to enable the brake shoe to be pulled away from the brake drum by the spring 33. A guide roller 41 is freely rotatably mounted upon the free end of the arm 35 and guides the wrapping material from the roll 15 on to the load to be wrapped. In operation, the leading end of the wrapping material is secured to the load and lever 40 actuated to a position (see Fig. 4) in which the brake shoe is clear of the drum. Motor 26 is then started to rotate platform 22 to draw a first length of untensioned material from the roll on to the load. After sufficient material has been applied, lever 40 is withdrawn to allow the brake shoe to be biased by spring 36 into contact with the drum thus stopping rotation of the roll. As rotation of the load continues, the length of material between the roll and the load is stretched and applied to the load, the tension and thus the pull of the material gradually increasing during this time. Eventually a point is reached where the action of spring 36 is overcome by the combined action of spring 33 and the pull of the material on roller 41 and thus an arm 35 and the pressure of the brake shoe on the drum is diminished to allow a braked rotation of the roll 15. At this point the pull on the material begins to diminish because of rotation of the roll and a final equilibrium condition is reached when the pull on the material equals the frictional resistance of the brake, this in turn being determined by the action of springs 33 and 36 and the pull of the material on arm 35. When sufficient material has been wrapped around the load, rotation of the load is stopped, the material cut and the free end thus formed welded, bonded, or even stapled to the underlying material. A plastics cover 43 may be applied to the top surface of the load.
