Abstract

1470975 Power steering CAM GEARS Ltd 9 July 1974 [18 July 1973] 34230/73 Heading B7H In an hydraulic power-assisted steering system in which the two elements 51, 52 of a rotary valve are relatively rotatable subject to restraint by a torque rod, a source of fluid pressure 56 has one branch 57A supplying the assistance motor (not shown) via the valve and another branch 57B connecting the source to detent means which resist the relative rotation of the two valve elements. As shown, the detent means comprise steel balls 59 slidable in radial bores 58 in outer valve element 51 which in turn engage V-sectioned recesses 60 on the inner valve element 52. Increased drivers torque sensed by the torque rod results in relative rotation of the valve elements and hence increase in source pressure which is directed via line 57B and pressure chamber 57C to bores 58 to thrust the balls 58 inwardly into engagement with recesses 60 to lock the valve elements 51, 52.
