Abstract

1470531 Machinery safety devices; rollers ADDRESSOGRAPH MULTIGRAPH CORP 27 March 1974 [11 April 1973] 13696/74 Headings F2J and F2U In a photocopying machine, in which an original sheet in contact with a sensitized copy sheet is fed into a roller assembly 24 comprising driven lower wheels 34 on a fixed axis and driven upper rollers 30 on a floating axis, each upper roller has a soft resilient periphery normally brushing against the original sheet surface, but these rollers can be deflected to a raised position in response to entry of a foreign object, and the operator can reduce the rotation speed of the rollers by means of manually-actuated switches 102, 104. By further actuation of manual switches the operator may restore normal speed or obtain reverse drive at low speed. In addition to the resilient periphery, each upper roller has wheels 31, 33 which may bear against lower wheels 34. The soft resilient roller covering may consist of a tufted brush of nylon bristles 62, secured to a polystyrene core. Alternatively it may comprise a sleeve of polyurethane foam over a tubular core, or a soft-surfaced belt may be used in place of a roller. The operator may insert his fingers against the soft covering in order to manipulate and align the original sheet with the copy sheet and by the fingers may partly raise the upper rollers when slippage is required. The operator may choose to carry out this task at a reduced speed or forward feed, selected by manual switch 102 or 104, and full forward speed may be restored simply by a subsequent actuation of either switch 102 or 104. Furthermore, the operator may choose at any time to arrest the drive and cause it to feed in reversed direction at reduced speed, by manual actuation of a push-button switch 108, and full forward speed may be restored simply by a subsequent actuation of switch 108. Since the soft roller is arranged to accept the intended intrusion of the operator's fingers for the foregoing purposes, there is a risk of injury to the operator if the fingers were entered to a further extent, and also a risk of damage if objects, e.g. rulers, were drawn into the machine. Protection against these risks is provided by two control means 64, Fig. 4, located one at each end of the upper roller shaft 32, each comprising a limit switch 80 which becomes actuated when a shaft bushing 66 reaches its furthest upward travel in a guide block 68. Actuation of switch 80 causes drive to be reversed at slow speed, until normal forward drive is restored by actuation of manual switch 108.
