1470510 Card &c. toys: chessmen J RAYNE 17 June 1974 [19 June 1973] 29113/ 73 Headings A6H and A6S A playing piece for a game, e.g. a chessman, is erected from one or more blanks folded-up from cardboard, &c. to engage tongues and slots, the blank(s) providing an at least partly enclosed portion of the playing piece, e.g. a head portion, including an elongated tab extending from an edge of the enclosed region and anchored in a slot at the back of the enclosed region to hold the sides of the enclosed region together. In one construction, a card, &c. Fig. 1, is scored and slotted to provide two sets of blanks 1, &c. for erection to make the two queens of a chess set. Each set of blanks consists of a main blank to form an enclosed region, viz the head, and also the body of the queen, a crown blank 2 and a base blank 3. Each main blank 1 includes an elongated tab 24 extending from that part of the blank which will form the lowermost part of the enclosed region or head when the queen has been erected. First the head of the blank is folded-up, Fig. 8, with the elongated tab 24 passed through slots 25, 26 holding the sides, &c. of the head together. Hair pieces 36 are folded-in, Fig. 9, and secured by passing the elongated tab 24 through slots 27. The erected head is next folded-down towards a main body panel 1, and the tab 24 passed through slots 28 at the back of the head, Fig. 10. The body panel 1, Fig. 12, is curved round, the crown blank 2 bent to form a ring and fitted, and the nose blank 3 attached to slots 33. The ends of the hairpieces 36 are pushed into slots 37 at the top of the body panel. Other blanks for erection to form kings, Fig. 2, 16 (not shown), bishops, Fig. 3, 15 (not shown) and pawns, Fig. 5, 17 (not shown) are described. Additionally, knights are erected from blanks, Fig. 4 (not shown) not having an elongate tab extending from their head portions, and rooks or castles from blanks, Fig. 6 (not shown), not providing head portions. The playing pieces can be partially telescoped and arranged in a box, Fig. 18 (not shown), for storage. The blanks may before erection simulate a book. A stand may be provided for each playing piece.
