Abstract

1470491 Laminates ALBI MFG CORP 4 Aug 1975 32560/75 Heading B5N A laminating process comprises (A) applying to a substrate surface having corners or other sharp edges an intumescent paint consisting essentially of a volatile liquid vehicle, 35 to 150 parts by weight of a resinous film-forming binder, 120 to 475 parts by weight of one or more solid spumific agents, and not less than 2% by weight of glass fibres (exclusive of the weight of any organic coating on the fibres), based on the weight of the other ingredients and (B) bonding to the paint a flexible, permeable, conformable, incombustible fabric sheet. The intumescent coating may be dried either before or after applying the fabric sheet, the fabric sheet being preferably bonded to the coating by the permeation and subsequent drying of the coating. The fabric sheet may consist of an incombustible material, e.g. glass fibre fabric; a combustible material, e.g. cotton fabric or an oiled canvas overcoated with an overcoating of intumescent paint which may or may not contain glass fibres; or an incombustible material coated with an overcoating of an intumescent paint. The volatile liquid vehicle may be water, a hydrocarbon, alcohol, ketone, ether or chlorinated hydrocarbon and the binder may be present as a preformed material or in the form of two or more ingredients which react with each other to form a resinous film-forming binder as the paint dries, e.g. a mixture of urea or thiourea or dicyandiamide or melamine with an aliphatic aldehyde, such materials being optionally admixed with or replaced by drying oils, alkyds cellulose esters or ethers, starch, chlorinated rubber, rubber hydrochloride, polymers and copolymers of vinyl or vinylidene chloride, polychloroprene, and epoxy resins. Specified spumific agents are dicyandiamide, melamine pyrophosphate, mono- or di-ammonium phosphate, phosphoric acid, guanylurea phosphate, ammonium sulphate, sulphamic acid, ammonium sulphamate, ammonium bromide, sodium tungstate, boric acid, sodium borate, polyphosphonylamide and sodium, potassium, calcium and zinc metaphosphates. Other conventional additives may be included in the paint which may be applied in the form of a solution or dispersion by brushing, spraying or by roller, the glass fibres used being optionally admixed with asbestos or ceramic fibres. The substrate may be of steel.
