Abstract

146,990. Western Electric Co., (Assignees of Morehouse, L. F.). Dec. 4, 1918, [Convention date]. Addition to 146,520, [Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs &c.]. Ciphers.-In a cipher telegraph system of the kind described in the parent Specification, two or more ciphering-machines are employed operating conjointly through a set of relays with a machine upon which the unciphered message is set up. The ciphering characters on the looped tape are different in number from those on the tape of the other machine in order to avoid repetition of the ciphering combinations set up by the two machines. A keyboard or tape machine A, Fig. 1, operated by the unciphered message controls selectively contacts 1 .. 5 connected to the terminals of selecting magnets 1<d> .. 5<d> respectively. The other terminals of the magnets 1<d> .. 5<d> are connected to the armatures 11 .. 15 of relavs 1<c> .. 5<c>. The circuits of the windings of the relays 1<c> .. 5<c> are controlled by a tape machine X through which a looped ciphering tape is run and by a tape machine Y through which a looped ciphering tape is run. The cipher characters in the tape passing through the machine X are different in number from the characters in the tape passing through the machine Y. If the character J is passing through the machine A at the same time as the character O is passing through the machine X and the character R through the machine Y the relays 1<c> .. 5<c> are operated in accordance with the character L and the magnets 1<d> .. 5<d> in accordance with the character B. When the ciphered tape is passed through a machine A simultaneously with the passage of looped ciphering tapes through the machines X and Y the message is de-ciphered. To decipher the message as it is received over the line, a line relay 41, Fig. 2, energized in accordance with the current impulses of the ciphered message operates in conjunction with a rotary distributor D to the contact segments 1<1> .. 5<1> to which the magnets. 1<d> .. 5d are connected.
