The cover comprises a plurality of U-shaped sections (39A-39D) Fig. 34 (not shown) each provided with a projection engaging a corresponding recess in the adjacent section. Three of the sections have hingedly connected portions which allow the shape of the cover to be varied. The lower-most section is engaged with a board (47) pivotally connected to the bedpan and lockable in one of a number of positions. The mattress is supported on a bed frame including a mechanism for replacing a supplementary mattress 17 disposed in the recess by the bedpan. In the first embodiment the supplementary mattress is supported by a movable frame 55 supported above a fixed frame 52 by pivotally inter-connected crossed-links 53, 54, the pivot 58 of the links being connected to a rod (59) Fig. 1 (not shown) movable on rotation of a screw (61) to move the pivot and hence lower the frame 55 together with the mattress 17. After lowering of the mattress 17, a truck 26 in which the bedpan is supported is moved along grooved rails 25 until the pan is aligned with the recess, movement being effected on rotation of one of a pair of sprockets 31, 32 engaged by an endless chain, a pin on the truck engaging the chain. The height of the bedpan may be adjusted by removal or addition of one or more plates 30 disposed in the bottom of the truck. The bedpan transfer mechanism may be omitted, the bedpan is placed on the moveable frame 55 after the mattress 17 has been removed and the frame is then raised. In a second embodiment the mattress or bedpan is supported on a base 68 moveable vertically in a guide frame 67 by a lever 70 pivotally engaged with the base and pivotally connected to a bracket 69 suspended from the bed frame. The lever is supported in one of a number of positions by engagement with one of a number of notches 74a in a plate 72 fixed to the bed frame.
