Abstract

1469432 Ball and socket joints NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 18 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 11856/74 Heading E2F A ball and socket joint, of the type comprising a housing 12, a studded ball 20 and two socket portions 14, 16 retained by a plate 40, is assembled by forming the housing with a shoulder portion 52 (see Fig. 3) and providing the lower socket portion 16 with a projection 58-the portion 16 is of a material deformable by heat (such as thermoplastics) and a heated member (59 Fig. 4) can be used to define the required relationship between the end of the projection 58 and the shoulder 52 by thermoplastically compressing the projection before the retaining plate 40 is attached. In Figs. 1, 3, 4 the projection is set flush with the shoulder to exactly engage the plate 40 and allow zero play; the heated member 138 in Fig. 10 allows the projection to extend beyond the shoulder so that the joint will be pre-loaded when the plate 40 is attached; in Fig. 12 the projection is set inwards from the shoulder to provide a joint with some degree of play. The plate 40, enclosing a spring 54, is attached by bending over the housing portion 56.
