Abstract

1469168 Recovering monomer MONSANTO CO 8 March 1974 [9 March 1973 (2)] 10422/74 Heading B1B In an apparatus for recovering alkenylaromatic (e.g. styrene) monomer from a molten stream comprising the monomer together with oligomers and polymers thereof, the stream from a polymerising apparatus (not shown) is passed to falling strand devolatiliser 30 comprising two subatmospheric pressure flash tanks 36, 37 connected in series, the superheated monomer-containing vapour from tank 36 is passed via ducts 45, 66 to stripper 60 in which the vapour is passed upwardly through sieve trays 71 and is washed to remove oligomers therefrom, with a downwardly flowing liquid comprising monomer and oligomers, and the superheated monomer-containing vapour from tank 37 is condensed with liquid at less than 25‹C from spray heads 101. The condensed liquid is supplied to sprayheads 101, used as washing liquid in stripper 60 or returned to the polymerising apparatus. The liquid from stripper 60 is recycled thereto, passed to the polymerising apparatus or discharged. The liquid 69 in stripper 60 is maintained at a predetermined level. The pressure in tank 37 is less than that in tank 36. The monomer-containing vapour from stripper 60 may be condensed and returned to the polymerising apparatus.
