Abstract
1469157 Production of polyalphaolefin fibrid gels SNAM PROGETTI SpA 8 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 20390/74 Heading C3P Alphaolefins are homopolymerized to produce a fibrous gel in the presence of (a) AlR x X 3-x where R is hydrocarbon, X is halogen and x is 1#Î#2, and (b) a vanadium compound of the formula V(NR<SP>1</SP> 2 ) 4 or a mixture of a vanadium or vanadyl halide and an aluminium compound of formula Al(NR<SP>2</SP> 2 ) 3 where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrocarbon radicals. The process is carried out in the presence of a non-solvent for the homopolymer formed. The fibrous gel is then ground to produce a gel of homopolymer fibrids of the polymerization process may be carried out in the presence of hydrogen. Examples refer to the production of polyethylene fibrous gels by the polymerization of ethylene in heptane in the presence of V(NMe 2 ) 4 + AlEtCl 2 orAlEtCl 2 + Al(NMe 2 ) 3 + VCl 4 or VOCl 3 , followed by separation of the gel containing polymerization solvent and grinding thereof to produce the gel of fibrids.
