Abstract
1388308 Olefin polymerization catalyst CHISSO CORP 4 Sept 1972 [4 Sept 1971] 40922/72 Heading C3P An olefin polymerization catalyst comprises (i) the solid product of reacting TiCl 3 .1/3AlCl 3 in an inert hydrocarbon solvent with an ether or thioether of the formula R<SP>1</SP>-A-R<SP>2</SP> or R<SP>6</SP>- (OC 2 H 4 ) m -OR<SP>7</SP>, where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 1 -C 8 alkyl or R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are H or C 1 -C 5 alkyl, n is 0, 1 or 2, A is oxygen or sulphur, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are C 1 -C 3 alkyl and m is 1, 2, 3 or 4; and (ii) a trialkyl aluminium or dialkylaluminium halide whose alkyl groups have 1 to 8 C atoms. The titanium complex is preferably first activated by grinding. The solid product (i) may be separated from the reaction with the ether and used in the dry form, preferably after removal of excess ether by washing or evaporation. Alternatively it may be used without separation from the slurry in which it is formed; in this case any excess ether is preferably deactivated by aging the slurry with an organoaluminium compound, which may or may not be the same as component (ii). Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene, propylene, butene-1 and ethylene/propylene mixtures, the ether used to prepare catalyst component (i) being di-n-butyl or di-n-hexyl ether, di-n-butyl thioether or diethyleneglycol dimethylether and component (ii) being Et 2 AlCl, Et 2 AlI, Et 3 Al or (i-Bu) 2 AlCl.
