Abstract
The surface of a carrier, e.g. a lithographic plate which contains metallic silver in the form of an image-like pattern, is oleophilised by an exclusively chemical treatment. To this end, it is exposed to an acidic aqueous salt solution which contains a cyanoferrate(III) anion and an organic cation which is able to form a water-insoluble oleophilic complex with oxidised silver. The organic cation is derived from a protonatable nitrogen-containing carbon-hydrogen compound having a (formal) imino group which is in resonance with adjacent groups of the molecule. Said complex former cation is, e.g., an amidine compound having the characteristic group <IMAGE> , especially 2-benzoylimidazoline (R2 = benzyl). A salt which can be used in the treatment solution and causes oxidation of the silver and subsequent complex formation with oleophilisation is obtained by reacting an alkali metal cyanoferrate(III) with the above-defined organic compound in an aqueous medium with the addition of acid. Instead of adding acid, an acid addition salt of the organic compound can be employed.
