Abstract

1468862 Signal cables AMP Inc 9 Aug 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 35187/74 Heading H1A A flexible cable for a transmission line comprises a flat flexible insulating substrate having a signal conductor 12 on one surface that extends longitudinally of the cable but is laterally offset from the longitudinal centre line of the substrate and on the opposite surface a ground conductor 14 also extending longitudinally and which describes a regular tortuous path laterally across the substrate, the flat substrate being folded along the longitudinal centre line so that the surfaces bearing the signal conductor 12 overlap and the conductor is sandwiched between portions of the ground conductor. The tortuous path, before folding, may be generally sinusoidal and may be from one edge of the substrate to the other. The ground conductor may be in two halves (58, 60, Fig. 4, not shown), each being laterally offset from, and on opposite sides of, the longitudinal centre line with each describing a generally sinusoidal path which is a mirror image of the other. There may be several signal conductors (56) and alternate ones may be connected (not shown) by pins, staples, welds to form quasi-coaxial lines (Fig. 6, not shown). Termination may be by crimps 22, 24 Fig. 2, either from the same or opposite sides, or (not shown) soldered connection to terminal pads 18, 20 of enlarged area formed at equal intervals along the ground and signal conductors, corresponding pads being spaced apart and aligned. The fold may be retained by adhesives. By choice of the thickness and dielectric properties of the substrate and the wavelength or pitch of the ground conductor the characteristic impedance of the folded line can be determined. It is stated that improved cross-talk, both cable to cable and channel to channel is shown while the high frequency attenuation is reduced and the impedance is stable.
