1468796 Moulding compositions D A J PATTERSON and T A WILLIAMS 5 Feb 1974 5813/73 Heading C3N A moulding composition for use in the manufacture of thermally-insulating refractory articles has the consistency of a "plastic solid" and contains water and/or other liquid, 1-20% by weight of paper fibres and/or cardboard fibres and 60-95% by weight particulate refractory material, the percentages being based on the dry solids content of the composition. A "plastics solid" is defined as having a consistency such that when a shovelful of the composition is deposited on a flat surface it merely slumps without showing any further tendency to flow out over the surface after the initial slump. The moulding composition has a consistency similar to that of brick-laying mortar and generally has an apparent viscosity of at least 200,000 centipoises (254). The particulate refractory material may be crushed fire-brick with a particle size not exceeding 10 mesh (B.S.S.). The composition may also include a binder and/or sintering agent, e.g. ball clay, a filler having a substantially lower density than the refractory filler, or an inorganic fibrous material. The moulding composition may be produced by three different methods. The first method comprises mixing paper and/or cardboard together with liquid in a mixture, subjecting the mixture to mechanical agitation until a fibrous pulp is formed, and then mixing in the particulate refractory material. In the second method the paper and/or cardboard, particulate refractory material and liquid are mixed simultaneously. The third method comprises introducing paper and/or cardboard and liquid into pulping equipment, mixing the mixture in the pulping equipment into a thick liquid pulp, and then adding the particulate refractory material. In the examples plastic solids are formed from water, newspaper, crushed fibrebrick and phenol formaldehyde novolak resin as binder (1); paper, crushed fire-brick, calcined alumina, ball clay, dextrine and water (2); and cardboard, water, alumino-silicate refractory powder, calcined alumina, alumino-silicate fibres and phenol formaldehyde novolak resin.
