Abstract

1468737 Arc extinguishing in switches S & C ELECTRIC CO 4 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 43067/74 Heading H1N A high voltage circuit interrupter comprises a hollow housing formed in one piece of an insulating material and comprising a hollow portion 14 enclosing the operating mechanism, a hollow insulator portion 16 and a hollow muffler portion 18, the hollow interiors of these portions communicating with one another. The housing is formed of an insulating material such as cycloaliphatic epoxy resin and may have semiconductive coatings on the inside and or outside surfaces. Electrical stress shields 200, 206 are incorporated in the housing near the position where movable contact 54 engages fixed contact 62 and where the movable contact stops in the contacts open position. A housing mounting flange 20 carries the electrical connection to the fixed contact. A lining 70 is positioned around the interior of the insulator portion of the housing, and a trailer 58 is included with the movable contact, both lining and trailer being formed of a material that produces an arc quenching gas upon exposure to an electric arc. In the muffler portion is a perforated sleeve 100, and alumina particles are confined between this sleeve and the interior of the muffler to absorb and cool hot arc gases. An exhaust nozzle assembly 106 allows venting of gases to the atmosphere, a baffle 110 preventing the alumina particles from clogging the nozzle hole 108.
