Abstract

1468229 Internal combustion engines ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 17 April 1974 [18 April 1973] 16701/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division B 1] A method of decontaminating exhaust gases of an I.C. engine during the warm-up phase comprises monitoring the temperature in the or at least one of a thermal and/or catalytic reactor, rendering at least one spark-plug of the engine inoperative when the temperature monitored exceeds a predetermined value and then further rendering the sparkplug(s) operative. The predetermined value of the temperature is made the self-ignition temperature of unburnt fuel/air mixture, approx 250‹C, so that the fuel mixture in at least one cylinder is passed unburnt to the reactor where combustion takes place. This provides a fast warm-up of the reactor. A second predetermined temperature is made the operating temperature of the reactor, approx 500‹, which is used to render the spark-plug(s) operative. A temperature sensor 29, which monitors the temperature, is connected to a switching circuit which includes a threshold value switch 30 and timing switch 31. The switch 31 energizes a relay 32 to open contact 33 and render spark-plug 17 inoperative. After a predetermined time the relay is de-energized and the plug 17 rendered operative. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a double threshold switch (34) is operated by the sensor. The switch (34) de-energizes the relay 32 when the reactor reaches its operating temperature.
