1468046 5-Membered heterocyclic rings containing nitrogen IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 May 1975 [28 June 1974] 28803/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the production of sterically hindered 5-membered heterocyclic rings containing nitrogen by the catalytic reductive cyclization of sterically hindered amines of the formula where R 1 is an organic group consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms and optionally also oxygen and/or sulphur and/or nitrogen and/or halogen atoms, R 2 , R 3 , R 6 and R 7 may be the same or different groups and are organic groups consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms and optionally also oxygen atoms and any two of R 2 , R 3 , R 6 and R 7 (particularly R 2 and R 3 and/or R 6 and R 7 ) may be linked together to form a single group and R 4 , R 5 , R 8 and R 9 may be the same or different and are hydrogen or an organic group. The example uses a catalyst of palladium on charcoal and subsequently platinium oxide.
