Abstract

1467799 Moulding textured articles ABITA INTERNATIONAL (UK) Ltd 21 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 9794/73 Heading B5A Textured articles are produced by applying to a silicone rubber mould a layer of a mixture of a pulverized material and a catalysed fluid polyester resin which does not fully polymerize where it makes direct contact with the mould and before this surface layer hardens, applying a backing of filler and a synthetic resin which bonds with the polyester resin and, after removing the moulding from the mould, removing unpolymerized polyester from the surface layer leaving exposed particles of pulverized material. The pulverized material may be metal, e.g. bronze, brass, tin, copper, lead or aluminium, wood, plastics, stone, slate, dolomite, etc., the particles preferably being 5-45Á in size. The layers may be applied by brushing or spraying, e.g. from separate nozzles for the polyester resin and the pulverized material. Unpolymerized polyester may be removed from the surface by abrasion or by a solvent and the exposed pulverized material may be polished or stained, etc. The filler may be the pulverized material and may be slate, dolomite, fibreglass or minute balloons of phenolformaldehyde resin or glass. The backing may be reinforced, e.g. by plywood, chipboard or metal sheet, block, rod, bar or wire, etc. and may also be weighted, e.g. by lead powder or shot. Moulding may be effected in several pieces to be joined together to form the finished article. The article may be a building cladding or tile, a plaque, ashtray, ornament, chesspiece, a decorative panel, door panel or table top. The mould may comprise a silicone rubber layer on a plaster or fibreglass backing or be wholly of silicone rubber.
