Abstract

1467420 Wood preservation ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 11 March 1974 [9 March 1973 15 June 1973] 11419/73 and 28544/73 Heading A5E Wood is preserved by treatment with an aqueous liquor containing 0.01-0.4% by wt. of an organotin compound having three organic groups bound to a tin atom through Sn-C lends and a mono-quaternary ammonium compound in a amount sufficient to disperse the organotin compound (e.g. 0.02-5% by wt.) under conditions providing a leading of 0.15- 1.5 Kg of organotin compound/cu metre of wood. Specified organotin compounds are bis (tri-n-butyltin) oxide, bis (tri-n-butyl tin) sulphide, and tri-n-butyl tin acetate, acrylate, methacrylate, phosphate and chloride. The corresponding trihexyltin, tricyclohexyltin and triphenyltin compounds are also of particular use. Particular quaternary ammonium compounds used include benzalkonium chlorides of the formula: C6H5. CH2N(CH3)2-R<+>Cl<-> where R is a mixture of alkyl groups having 8-18 carbon atoms, benzethonium chloride, hexadecyl pyridinium halides, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, phenoxyethyl dimethyl dodecyl ammonium bromide, di-n-octyl dimethyl ammonium bromide and n-dodecylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. Compositions for use in the process are conveniently made in the form of a concentrate containing 1-20% by wt. of organotin compound and 20-90% by wt. of quaternary compound in water.
