Abstract
1467241 Dovetailing J L WAITE 17 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 25591/73 Heading B5L In a jig and co-operating tool holder for producing complementary dovetail joint grooves in pairs of wooden workpieces, the jig comprises an integral workpiece support 18 having mutually perpendicular workpiece support surfaces 19, 20 and a tool holder guide member 12 having sides substantially parallel to the surface 20 and adjustably mounted on the support 18 for movement towards and away from said surface so as to determine horizontal cutting depth "d", and the tool holder comprises a cylindrical or generally prismatic body 3 having opposed transverse grooves 11 for holder guiding engagement with at least one slot in the guide member 12, a shaft 6 rotatably mounted in the body and having projecting ends 7, 10 respectively accepting a conical cutting tool 9 and connectible to a rotary drive means such as a portable hand or power drill, and a transverse shank 14 secured in the body in alignment with the grooves and threaded at least in part to accept a knurled circular periphery nut 15 which is of greater diameter than the distance between the grooves 11 and is engageable with top edges of the guide member so as to determine vertical cutting depth "c". A handle 16 also threaded on the shank acts as a nut locking means and may be hollow for storage of different size cutting tools. In use, workpieces A, B are held, as by G-clamps, against the surfaces 19, 20. As shown, the guide member is comb-like, having several parallel slots 21 and has each of its ends attached to the support 18 by a screw connection 23, an arm 22 and a horizontal adjustment screw-and-slot connection 24, 25. Further, fine, horizontal adjustment of the guide member, to cater for re-grinding of cutting tools, is provided by relatively longitudinally adjustable members 27, 28 having co-operating tapered surfaces 30, 32 and respectively engageable with or attached to the guide member and engageable with the workpiece B. To provide for large tool holder/guide member slot bearing surfaces, the slots 21 are spaced at twice the required pitch of the dovetail grooves, and accordingly the guide member can be moved laterally between two cutting positions the distance between which is equal to the required pitch.
