Abstract

1466923 IC engines - auxiliary combustion chambers HONDA GIKEN KOGYO KK 26 March 1974 13409/74 Heading F1B An I.C. engine comprises a cylinder 25 in which is disposed a piston 1 which is connected to a crank-shaft by means of rod 43, the piston defining with the cylinder 25 and head 23, a main combustion chamber 2. A relatively weak air/fuel mixture is supplied into combustion chamber 2 through inlet passage 6 controlled by inlet valve (9), and exhaust gases discharge from the cylinder through passage 8 controlled by exhaust valve 11. An auxiliary combustion chamber 5 is provided being laterally offset from the cylinder axis 21 and provided with an ignition means in the form of a spark-plug 4. The auxiliary combustion chamber communicates with the main combustion chamber through a passage 3. A relatively rich air/fuel mixture is supplied to the auxiliary chamber through passage 7 controlled by inlet valve 10. In accordance with the invention the principal axis 35 of the flame discharging through the passage 3 passes through or near to a point 40 which is at the centre of gravity of the main combustion chamber when the piston is 90 degrees past top dead centre. The axis of the flame is not necessarily coincident with the axis of the passage 3. The axis of the flame intersects an imaginary sphere centred on the centre of gravity, the radius of the sphere being not greater than 16/100 of the diameter of the cylinder bore. The auxiliary combustion chamber 5 is defined by thin wall shell 29 having an opening 33 for passage of flame and an opening 34 adjacent the electrodes 49 of the spark-plug.
