Abstract
1466869 Electroluminescence DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 2 Aug 1974 [16 May 1973] 23273/73 Heading C4S [Also in Divisions G4 and H4] An electroluminescent device 10 for storing energy releasable in the form of light includes a ZnS phosphor doped with at least Pb as activator, the phosphor particles being coated with Cu, and the device being irradiated with infra-red so as to emit light after electrical excitation. Mn and Cu may be additional activators. Film 12 comprises phosphor particles in transparent polymethyl methacrylate resin, lamina 14 is of Al, and glass sheet 16 has conductive tin oxide strip 18. Pb concs. may be 0À03 to 0À54 wt. per cent, firing times may be ¢ to 5 hours and firing temperatures 800‹ to 1100‹ C. 4% Pb is included initially to allow for evaporation during firing. Mn may be in amount 10<SP>-3</SP> to 10<SP>-1</SP> wt. per cent, with initial concs. twice these values. Control 32 determines duration and intensity of excitation of device 10 by source 22 (e.g. variation of D.C. voltage or of pulse ht. or length of unidirectional pulses), and also commencement, duration and intensity of infra-red source 24 (e.g. GaAs, lamp, and 0À75 to 4 Ám. emission) and gate 40 operation, while photosensitive device 28 (e.g. a photodiode) (see Division Gl) may have two receptors and filter 48 responsive to green and orange respectively while optionally excluding infra-red in the case that a short infra-red pulse stimulates Pb only (green emission) while a longer pulse stimulates Pb and Mn to emit a green-orange mix. Repeated light pulses may result from a single excitation. The intensity increases as the infra-red pulse duration increases from 5 to 125 ms. and tends to constancy for greater duration. A particular sequence of operations is described to produce logic signals 0 and 1 and to operate as an information storage and retrieval apparatus (see Division G4). A mosaic of devices may display a radar track (see Division H4) with progressively dimmer spots indicating former positions. Ageing effects may be mitigated by pulse operation. The Cu coating promotes h.v. gradients, making D.C. operation practicable without impairing pulse or A.C. operation. Factors governing emission intensity are listed.
