1466866 Infusor RUSSELL HOBBS Ltd 6 June 1974 [15 March 1973] 12638/73 Heading A4E [Also in Division F4] An apparatus for making hot beverages comprises a container 17 divided into two compartments 31, 32 by a means whereby adequate heating in a heating zone 18 causes liquid to transfer from compartment 32 through a passage and the zone into compartment 31 with enlargement of compartment 31 and diminution of compartment 32. Plate 19 horizontally divides the quartic-bodied coffee percolator 11 into container 17 and zone 18. Container 17 is divided into the compartments 31, 32 by a plastics bag 33 whose mouth is supported by a rim 34, compartment 32 preferably being the interior of the bag 33. Zone 18 contains an aluminium heating block 20 surrounded by an electrical element 22 and insulation 23. A stainless steel tube 27 is embedded in block 20 connected to tubes 28, 29 each containing a non-return valve 30a, 30b respectively. A nozzle 35 of bag 33 is plugged into tube 28. Bag 23 is filled with cold water, the volume being about equal to that of container 17. By gravity, water passes from bag 33 through nozzle 35, through valve 30a, tubes 28, 27, 29 into tube 39. Heating causes steam-pressure to shut valve 30a and water from the passage between valves 30a, 30b is forced through tube 39 into basket 36 and through ground coffee 37 into compartment 31. As the passage empties, the pressure diminishes and valve 30a opens to allow more water from bag 33 to enter. Non-return valve 30b prevents water entering the passage from tube 39. Repeated cycles empty bag 33 and fill compartment 31 while bag 33 collapses. Thus the percolated coffee is not reboiled or recirculated. A keep-warm element may be fitted in compartment 31.
