Abstract
1466464 Treating blood SANDOZ Ltd 11 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 16351/74 Heading A5R A blood dialyser, intended for use with a single vein-puncture, has an arterial line 34 and a venous line 62, a blood pump 38, means 70, 150 for simultaneously closing the venous line and opening the arterial line until a predetermined pressure has been built up in the system and for subsequently opening the venous line and closing the arterial line for a predetermined time interval, there being means for adjusting the predetermined pressure and the time interval respectively, independence on the pump speed, to build up the predetermined pressure during closure of the venous line in a time greater than the predetermined time interval so that the duration of opening of the venous line is less than the duration of opening of the arterial line. A conduit 66 transmits pressure in a bubble trap 64 arranged in the venous line to a controller 70 which includes a pressure monitor and a time circuit. The pump 38 comprises a continuously rotating arm 42 supporting cylinders 48, 50 which alternately squeeze the arterial line 34 against a semicircular track 52 to provide a unidirectional pulsatile flow of blood towards the dialyser 60. With the arterial line open and the venous line closed by a detent 156 of a clamp 150 the pressure build-up in the venous line is sensed by the controller 70 and on reaching a predetermined value set by a marker 88 causes the detent 156 to change over to open the venous line and close the arterial line. Blood then flows under the built-up pressure through the venous line to the patient for a time determined by the time circuit which is set by a dial 86. Normally the arterial line is open for a longer period than the venous line. The arterial and venous lines are connected to a single cannula 24 by a bifurcated coupling 28.
