Abstract

1466371 Modulating light E BAUCHES SA 29 April 1974 [21 May 1973] 18732/74 Heading G2F In a display device of the type comprising a shaped layer of solid electrochromic material, changes colour in response to an electric current, on a transparent electrode and a liquid electrolyte disposed between the shaped layer and a counterelectrode, the electrolyte is doped with a salt of a cation selected to render insoluble the products derived from the electrochromic material during operation of the device, and so preserve the shaping of the layer. For example, with a layer of WO 3 , it is believed that isopolytungstic acids are produced in the presence of an acid electrolyte. Large ions such as K<SP>+</SP>, Rb<SP>+</SP>, Cs<SP>+</SP>, Ca<SP>2+</SP>, Ag<SP>+</SP>, Tl<SP>+</SP>, Sr<SP>2+</SP>, Pb<SP>2+</SP>, NR 4 <SP>+</SP>, PR 4 <SP>+</SP>, (ferrocene)<SP>+</SP>, and Ba<SP>2+</SP> form insoluble salts therewith. BaSO 4 present at, or in excess of, saturation levels, is prefered. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1186541.
