Abstract

1465944 Seaming non-metallic sheet material OFFICINA MECCANICA PRASSEDE Srl 20 Feb 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 7648/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A machine for wrapping objects 9 in thermoweldable film 1 comprises a welding element and a backing element movable towards and away from each other, the welding element comprising (a) a bar 13 with two welding projections 13a, 13b defining a groove 13c therebetween and (b) a pair of clamping strips 29, 30 disposed one on each side of the bar 13 and loaded by springs 31 so that their free edges normally extend beyond the edges of the projections 13a, 13b, and the backing element comprising (a) a bar 28 with two backing surfaces 50, 51 for the projections 13a, 13b and the strips 29, 30 during welding, the bar 28 being urged towards the bar 13 by springs 32, and (b) a knife blade 18 for severing the film housed in a slot 28<SP>1</SP> between the surfaces 50, 51. As shown in Fig. 8, the bar 13 is supported by a frame 14 and comprises two steel plates 13<SP>1</SP>, 1311, which are heated electrically. The upper edges of the strips 29, 30 are bent at right angles and guided by pins 55 on the frame 14. Elements 56 slide in slots 57 in the strips 29, 30 to assist guiding. The bar 28 is retained by a strip 17 on a frame 19 by screws 54 and urged upwardly by the springs 32. Metal plates 17<SP>1</SP> are screwed to the bar 28 to guide the bar vertically and to form seats 28<SP>11</SP>, 28<SP>111</SP> for two strips 50, 51 of heat insulating material. The blade 18 is fixed by pins to the frame 19. The frames 14, 19 are fixed to rack shafts 16, 20, respectively, Fig. 2, slidable in a fixed support. To move the bars 13, 28 towards and away from each other, the shafts 16, 20 are drivable in opposite directions by a gear-wheel 21 oscillated by a connecting rod 22 hinged to one arm of a pivotable lever 27. The other arm carries a pair of rollers 24 guided in respective facing grooves of coaxial rotatable cams 25, 26 which are able to be angularly offset one to the other. As described, the bars 13, 28 and the blade 18 are right angled, i.e. L-shaped. In operation, the bars 13, 28 are moved towards each other and the strips 29, 30 clamp the film against the strips 50, 51. The springs 31 are compressed until the projections 13a, 13b contact the film to effect welding and the strips 50, 51 are pressed downwardly against the action of the springs 32 so that the blade 18, which does not move, severs the film. In the machine described, Figs. 1 and 2, a spool of film 1 folded longitudinally is supported by a shaft 2 projecting from an arm 52 which also carries idlers 3, 4, 5. Additional idlers are carried by a movable frame 34. The film layers are separated by a wedge 6 supported by two diverging metal surfaces 7, 8 between which the object 9 is introduced, e.g. by a conveyer (10), Fig. 3 (not shown). A pusher 11 pushes the object 9 on to a discharge conveyer 12, 12<SP>1</SP> which acts as a support whilst the film is cut and welded.
